GPsPlease use the NHS Choices panel below to find GP surgeries in your area or click here to find other services. It is important to note that all GP practices have geographical boundaries, so you may be limited to registering at one of a selection of practices within a reasonable proximity to your home. If you need any help or advice in registering with a GP, or more information on your nearest GP that is accepting patients, contact PALS on 0800 5879159. Extended AccessNHS South East Essex is running a scheme to make it easier for people in the area to see their GP at a time that suits them. As a result, over 80% of the GP practices in the area are now offering, or are planning to offer, GP appointments outside the core hours of 8am-6.30pm, Monday to Friday. NHS South East Essex, which commissions GP services in the area, has set up a payment scheme as an incentive for surgeries to open for longer. In all, an additional £1.6m is available for those GP practices in south east Essex which are willing to extend surgery hours. The scheme was launched in May 2008, when only a handful of GP practices in south east Essex offered extended hours. Out-of-hours GP servicesWhat are GP out of hours services? If you or your family need medical attention when your GP practice is closed, call the normal surgery phone number and you will either be automatically transferred to the out of hours service, or be given a dedicated number for the service.
A qualified health advisor will advise you on an appropriate course of action. Your own GP will be told what has happened as soon as the surgery re-opens. Who provides GP out of hours services in south east Essex?
Since December 2004, the out of hours service in Castle Point, Rochford and Southend has been provided through a partnership between the local Ambulance trust ESSAM (Essex Ambulance), NHS Direct (NHSD) and Care UK.
What happens if I need to use the GP out of hours service?
Having obtained the relevant number by calling your normal GP surgery, you will normally be called back by a doctor who will discuss and assess your condition, agreeing with you the best way in dealing with your condition. This may be by self-medication, arranging an appointment to see a doctor in one of the local primary care centres, or where clinically appropriate, a Doctor will visit your home.
The main primary care centre is located in the fracture clinic adjacent to the accident and emergency department of Southend Hospital (Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust). On the weekend, a further primary care centre is open on Long Road, Canvey Island. Both of the surgeries operate an appointment system; however, there is a walk-in centre available in Pantile Avenue, Southend on sea.
Other local services available out of hours
The St Luke’s Walk-in Centre is open from 8.00am to 8.00pm 365 days a year and will treat both minor injuries and urgent primary care illnesses. Patients do not need to be registered with a GP for the walk-in facility. No appointments are necessary and it operates on a first come first serve basis.
